There’s water coming through your ceiling and you don’t know where to start.
First, breathe. The roof is only part of the problem right now: the goal is stopping more water from getting in until it can be fixed right. Here’s the order that keeps a bad night from getting worse.
First, make it safe
- Get everyone out from under the wet area.
- Cut power to any room taking on water.
- Don’t climb up in the storm. Wait for it to pass because a wet, damaged roof is not the place to be.
Then protect what you can
- Move furniture and valuables clear of the drip.
- Put down a bucket and towels.
- If a spot on the ceiling is bulging, that’s trapped water- leave it to be drained on purpose, NOT all at once.
Document before you clean up
Photograph everything. Photograph the roof, the interior, and any damaged belongings before you move or toss anything. That record matters later, whatever comes next.
How emergency tarping works
The first fix is temporary. A proper tarp or board-up seals the opening so the inside stays dry until a real repair is scheduled. Done right, it’s anchored and lapped to shed water, not a sheet of plastic held down with a brick. A good crew treats even the temporary step seriously:
“During the replacement of our damaged roof, we had a short thunderstorm that could have caused more damage. Tony and the Riddle Brothers team arrived and made sure the crew and our home were safe, and quickly covered the worksite to prevent further damage.”

Repair or replace?
Not every emergency ends in a new roof. One point of impact often means a targeted repair. Widespread hail or structural damage is a different conversation. A good roofer should show you what they find and lays out both paths, then lets you decide.
“Our home sustained roof and soffit damage from a huge tree branch. We called Tony to assess it, and within two days he gave a fair, honest quote. Soon after, we had a repaired roof and soffit that perfectly matched the house. It looked like the damage never happened.”
– Beverly Turner (Google review, 5★)
