In North Texas, that’s often roof rats and the way they get in is usually (surprise!) your roof. Poison and traps deal with the ones already inside, but if you don’t close the entry point, more are just going to follow. Here’s how to actually shut the door.
How roof rats get in
- Gaps where the roof meets the wall.
- Damaged or missing soffit and fascia.
- Uncapped vents and loose or lifted flashing.
- Overhanging tree branches that give them a bridge onto the roof.
Why they like North Texas roofs
Our mild winters and mature trees make this ideal roof-rat country. They’re strong climbers, and only need a gap about the size of a quarter, and an attic is warm, dry, and quiet, it’s everything they want.
Why the roof is the real fix
Traps handle the rats you have today. Sealing the roofline is what keeps the next ones out. And it goes without saying, but if a gap can fit a rat then there’s almost no way it keeps out water. So a rat problem up top is often an early warning of a roofing problem you haven’t noticed yet.
What to check before you call a roofer
Walk your roofline from the ground and look for gaps, chewed spots, or daylight at the eaves. Trim branches back several feet from the roof. If you spot a gap, it needs sealing before it becomes a leak on top of a pest problem.
